The city of East Lansing announced former interim chief Jen Brown as the new Chief of Police for the East Lansing Police Department last Thursday, May 15. The decision comes almost a year after former Chief of Police Kim Johnson resigned last May.
Johnson was put on administrative leave in April of 2024 after an internal investigation, then subsequently resigned a month later. When asked about the ongoing investigation, Brown wrote in an email to The State News, “I was not involved in the investigation of Chief Johnson, so I do not have any details to share.”
As police chief, Brown’s responsibilities will include overseeing the daily operations of the ELPD, setting strategic goals and “implementing initiatives that promote public safety, equity, and officer wellness,” Brown said.
A Lansing native, Brown graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and psychology and a master’s degree in criminal justice.
Brown joined the ELPD as deputy chief in December of 2023, before being selected as the interim police chief in December 2024.
Brown also worked for the Michigan State University Police Department for more than 15 years, her previous roles including police sergeant and police lieutenant.
“Serving the East Lansing community is an incredible honor,” Brown told The State News. “As an MSU alumna and former MSU DPPS Lieutenant, I have strong roots here. Being entrusted with the role of Chief of Police gives me the opportunity to give back to a community that has given me so much.”
The search for the new police chief was led by Baker Tilly, an advisory, tax and assurance firm. Applicants for the role sat through seven interview panels with city leadership, law enforcement professionals and members of the community. Brown was one of four finalists for the role.
“I’m honored to have been chosen through such a rigorous and inclusive process,” Brown said.
Brown will prioritize community relationships, recruitment and retention rates among police officers at the ELPD by “investing in the wellness and professional development of our officers.”
“One of the most pressing challenges we face is staffing,” Brown said. “We are actively implementing strategic initiatives focused on recruitment and retention.”
Brown also plans to “expand opportunities for community engagement and feedback, ensuring we are not only listening, but truly responding to the needs and concerns of those we serve.”
The new Chief of Police remains steadfast in her goal that the city of East Lansing remains a "safe and welcoming place for everyone," Brown said.
