The NCAA has sent Michigan State University its notice of allegations following the university’s self-reporting of recruiting violations during former football head coach Mel Tucker’s tenure, according to the NCAA Division I Infractions dashboard.

MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz mentioned the investigation during an April interview. The specifics of the allegations remain unclear, including the level of the violations.

Level I violations are those of which "seriously undermine or threaten the integrity of the NCAA collegiate model as set forth in the Constitution and bylaws, including any violation that provides or is intended to provide a substantial or extensive recruiting, competitive or other advantage, or a substantial or extensive impermissible benefit," according to NCAA bylaws.

Level II violations are those that "provide or are intended to provide more than a minimal but less than a substantial or extensive recruiting, competitive or other advantage." These violations include “more than a minimal but less than a substantial or extensive impermissible benefit” or “involves conduct that may compromise the integrity of the NCAA collegiate model as set forth in the Constitution and bylaws.”

"Michigan State is aware a notice of allegations was issued," said Matt Larson, executive senior associate athletic director/communications. "We do not have a copy."

The notice and investigation into MSU’s football program follows the departure of Alan Haller as Athletics Director and an ongoing legal battle with Tucker, who was fired in September 2023 following violations of Title IX policy.

The university has 90 days to formally respond to the notice of allegations by the NCAA.
