Michigan State University has announced the selection of J Batt as the next athletic director, one month after the departure of former athletic director Alan Haller.

Batt, who currently serves as Georgia Tech’s athletic director, is tapped for the position, pending board of trustees approval. Haller's departure was announced on May 1.

"J has an impressive record at several Power 5 schools and an impeccable reputation as a strong and innovative leader," MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz said in a statement. "He will bring experience, excitement and a commitment to elevating Spartan athletics to the next level. We are thrilled to have J join our leadership team at Michigan State."

Guskiewicz also gave thanks to co-interim athletic directors Jen Smith and men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo for their leadership during the search.

"This is a key moment in the history of Michigan State Athletics," Izzo said in a statement. "With J Batt's hiring, President Kevin Guskiewicz has found the right person to lead our department as college athletics continues to evolve. J has displayed tremendous innovation as a leader and has a proven track record of revenue generation."

Batt has served as Georgia Tech’s athletic director since 2022. In his first year with the program, 14 of 17 varsity programs earned a spot in postseason competition, and the football team has earned back-to-back bowl berths for the first time since 2013-14, marking the program's first appearance in the Associated Press Top 25 in nine years.

In a news release, Georgia Tech President Ángel Cabrera reflected on Batt’s tenure as vice president and athletic director.

“J has made a remarkable impact in a short time,” said Cabrera. “His vision and leadership elevated our athletics program — on the field, in the classroom, and across the national landscape. From fundraising and facilities to academic and competitive success, his legacy will be felt for years to come.”

Batt introduced the Full Steam Ahead campaign in 2023 — a $500 million effort focused on upgrading athletic facilities, improving the student-athlete experience and elevating Georgia Tech’s competitive standing. The initiative has already drawn over $300 million in commitments. In fiscal year 2024, the athletics department set a new fundraising record by bringing in $78.2 million, a 43% increase over the previous annual high.

In a statement, Batt expressed his gratitude to Guskiewicz and the Board of Trustees for the opportunity to lead the Spartans’ athletic program.

"Working together, in alignment with university leadership, the full athletics department and an enthusiastic fan base, we can take the positive momentum already happening at MSU and reach new levels of success as we move into the next era of intercollegiate athletics," Batt said. "My family and I look forward to joining the Michigan State and East Lansing communities."

Prior to his time at Georgia Tech, Batt served at the University of Alabama from 2017 to 2022 as executive deputy director of athletics, chief operating officer and chief revenue officer. In this role, he led all revenue-generating efforts, including philanthropic giving, ticket sales and other key income streams. He also oversaw the successful development and launch of the Crimson Standard — Alabama Athletics’ 10-year, $600 million capital initiative.

Batt has also provided national leadership in collegiate athletics, serving on the House Settlement Implementation Committee, tapped with guiding the post-settlement era structures, rules and operating principles. He also currently serves as chair of the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia.

A welcome reception and news conference are scheduled for this Wednesday. Batt’s contract and appointment as director of intercollegiate athletics will be voted on by the Board of Trustees at its June 13 meeting.

MSU spokespersons were unavailable for further information.
